Our History

Dartmoor Country Holidays is seen as the natural evolvement for Magpie Leisure Park which has been developed under the personal supervision of the Bidder family for over 80 years.

The Park was originally purchased in the 1930's by the late Reg and Kath Bidder. Initially devlopment concentrated on the residential, holiday static and touring side. Ten permanent 'caravan bungalows' and approximately fifteen holiday statics are still located on the site.

In the 1980's and 1990's Reg and Kath's sons, James and Peter, became increasingly involved in the management of the park. Tasteful development continued and the scandanavian lodges were chosen to provide a luxuorious alternative to holiday makers. There are now four lodges avaiable for rental.

The facilities for caravans and camping have also been improved. This has included the purchase of a neighbouring field which has been developed into a secluded spot by the the River Walkham.

The Park lies in a wonderful position on the western edge of the Dartmoor National Park — an area of great natural beauty that some find kinder and more gentle, compared with the northern and eastern parts of the Moor. Small and uncrowded in a peaceful woodland setting next to the River Walkham, it is one of these hard to find quiet places where you can relax and turn-off, idle by the river bank or take pleasant walks midst seasonal flowers, blackthorn and hawthorn bushes, birch and beech trees.

Early spring brings a host of bluebells creating an unbelievable carpet of soft blue in the woods.  The facilities of the Park are of very good quality and are well maintained by a team who are residents themselves on the park.
